This games table is designed to organise and allow numerous board games to be played. The design is playful and luxurious. The use of the table is envisaged as a playful act in itself with the theatrics of opening and removing the lid to reveal what is inside.
The table celebrates eternal childhood and how the act of play learnt in childhood travels with us through life and is too often forgotten as our lives get less simple. The creative approach was to create a games table which was playful and had a sense of sophistication that celebrates the act of play. A key consideration was that the use of the table itself would be a playful act that would be a delight in itself. The table is designed to be used by numerous players at a time and play is seen as a communal act.
The games table is made from Irish Walnut with a natural leather interior. The grain in the lid is matched across the surface and opens up before being lifted off to reveal a luxurious leather interior. Four drawers pull out for storage of games with a little sliding shelf in each drawer to be used as a place to leave a drink as you sit at the table. The table is a celebration of play and a celebration of walnut, the most delightful of materials. The ironmongery is kept minimal and made from solid brass, allowing components to hinge open and lift out.
It is the refinement of this piece that makes it special, it feels effortless and minimalist while overcoming the challenges of making moving parts and working in solid material. For example; as the top is so wide it would be typically unwise to make the lid in solid materials as they might twist or distort with time, to overcome this metal rods are concealed within the wood to ensure stability into the future.
