Warp and Weft

Materials; Irish oak, Irish ash.

Sculptural seating constructed using the natural properties of wood without the need for glues or fixings.
Made from Irish oak, a single plank is raised off the ground by a series of legs which penetrate through the seat. Through these oak legs the ash backrest is woven thus the warp (oak) and the weft (ash backrest). The structure uses no glue or fixings and was conceived with a sense of purity in mind. It is a structure to join people together as they sit.
The legs are tapered and therefore wedged into the seat forming a strong joint that will tighten as one sits. The ash backrest passes through the legs and bent to create a dynamic and comfortable form.
The intention of this piece is to investigate the possibilities of form without using copious amount of glue.
The first of these sculptural seating designs was made for the Electric Picnic Music and Arts Festival 2012.
